Case Study Overview:
Scope | 8-week high-impact Algebra I cycle
Focus | Priority state standards + core algebra foundations
Impact | +16 average points | Proficiency 23% → 67%
The Need
Bremen High School District was seeking targeted support for Algebra I students who were struggling to master foundational concepts. District leaders recognized that many 9th and 10th graders were entering class with gaps in functions, equations, and data analysis skills that are essential for success not only in Algebra I, but in every math course that follows.
The district’s goal was clear: strengthen core algebra skills and move significantly more students into proficiency within a single semester.
The Solution
To meet that need, Bremen partnered with GROW High-Impact Tutoring to provide focused, small-group, standards-aligned support designed to accelerate learning in a short cycle.
- GROW delivered structured Algebra I tutoring aligned to priority state standards, with consistent progress monitoring through pre-assessments, exit tickets, and final assessments. Instruction emphasized:
- Constructing and interpreting linear and exponential functions
- Solving and representing equations graphically
- Writing equations in one and two variables
- Strengthening algebraic reasoning and data analysis skills
- Students received personalized support while building both procedural fluency and conceptual understanding.
The Results
Across two semesters, the results were measurable and significant.
- Average assessment scores increased by 16 points in just 8 weeks.
- The percentage of students meeting proficiency nearly tripled, rising from 23% to 67%.
- In one term, students scoring above 70% increased from 8.8% to 51.7%, a 43 percentage point increase and a 489% relative gain.
- Stand-out Skills Gains:
- +38.97% growth in constructing linear and exponential functions
- +29.28% growth in representing and solving equations graphically
- +18.32% growth in interpreting key features of functions from graphs
- More GROW = more gains. Students who attended 80%+ of their GROW sessions demonstrated approximately 67% greater growth than their peers with lower attendance
- Results repeated over two semesters of GROW!
