Watch: Val Verde USD talks about how students with the greatest need took advantage of 24/7 academic support

CASE STUDY

At Val Verde USD, 24/7 Tutoring Engages Disadvantaged Students, Boosts Graduation Rates

“Teachers have been very encouraged. They felt that they are partners with the tutors and share the same goal.”

— Aimee Garcia, Director K-12 Education, Val Verde USD

Bridging equity gaps by providing academic support where, when and how students need it

Unlimited 24/7 tutoring extends academic support to students who traditionally have difficulty accessing it

The dilemma

The switch to distance learning had a negative impact on student grades — especially among the most disadvantaged students. Teachers didn’t have enough hours in the day to serve every student in need of academic support.

The solution

Val Verde sought an academic support solution that could help students any time of day or night, and was accessible by all. They partnered with Paper to provide every student with expert 24x7, 1:1 homework help, writing feedback and study support across 200 subject areas.

The takeaway

After just two months of usage, students engaged in 2,700 learning moments made of live 1:1 tutoring sessions and more than 1,200 essays submitted for review. Socioeconomically disadvantaged students took advantage of the platform more than anyone — and teachers saw improvements that aligned with classroom goals.
